Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to connect to the subconscious mind to create positive change in your life. There are many styles of hypnotherapy but they all have a couple of things in common: a strong desire to change and a state of deeply relaxed focus.

What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis a state of relaxed focus. It is a natural state and each of us enters such a state at least twice a day: once when we are falling asleep, and once when we are waking up. That kind of fuzzy, timeless state between dreaming and awake is a trance state. Trance is normal, natural and common.

Some people say after their first hypnotherapy appointment. “I wasn’t hypnotized – I knew what was going on the whole time!” Of course you did! Hypnosis is not a state of amnesia or of no awareness. On the contrary, in fact: hypnosis is a state of very raised awareness and focus.

What can’t be treated with hypnotherapy?
Serious mental health problems must be referred to a qualified psychotherapist or psychiatrist, the same as physical problems must always be treated by a physician.
Drug addiction, family dynamics disorders, clinical depression and other such problems need to be treated by doctors and psychiatrists, who can, at their discretion, prescribe hypnotherapy as a supplementary treatment

Will I lose control?
This is another myth. You will always be in control, and you can hear everything that’s going on. Hypnosis is a state of relaxed deep focus. If at any time you wish to be fully awake, you can just count to yourself “1 – 2- 3” and open your eyes.

A family member tried hypnosis to quit smoking. Why didn’t it work?
Changing a habit like smoking takes more than just a few hypnotic suggestions. The person must want the change, and they must have a substitute for smoking. Hypnosis will be used to find a healthy substitute, and then it can help flip the subconscious over to new, healthy habits.

Attending a seminar and listening to a stop-smoking CD can work, but it is usually much more effective to have an individual session with a hypnotherapist, who can personalise the approach, and make suggestions to match your lifestyle and circumstances.
